UKTV'S APPRENTICESHIPS SCHEME

How does UKTV's apprenticeship scheme work?

We offer all of our apprentices an 18 month opportunity with us and during that time they also study for a relevant NVQ qualification. So as well as getting valuable experience and building their knowledge and contacts in the industry while they're here, they're able to gain a vocational qualification.

How many apprenticeships does UKTV offer each year and in what areas of the business?

UKTV launched its apprenticeship scheme last year, with one apprentice joining the Dave and Gold channel marketing teams. Due to the positive impact he had on his team and the business, UKTV has since enrolled three further apprentices to join the Digital Marketing and VOD scheduling teams. UKTV is fully committed to continuing and growing its greatly successful apprenticeship scheme.

What are the highlights of UKTV's scheme?

Our apprentices have brought a fresh perspective and invaluable insight to the business. They have delivered impressive and tangible results, particularly in the emerging digital areas, which are instrumental to the company's growth strategy. We want our apprenticeships to provide young people with genuinely exciting roles and a route into TV, giving them a chance to build a career in an industry which is often considered hard to access. Apprenticeships now form a crucial and ongoing part of our recruitment and talent retention strategy, and symbolise the future of our growing business.

The apprentices credit the scheme at UKTV with providing them experience in working in a professional office environment and offering an extensive range of personal development and business-related training opportunities. UKTV's apprentices are recruited on fixed-term contracts on an entry level salary and receive exactly the same benefits and rewards as all other fixed term employees. Apprentices may also apply for permanent roles within UKTV.

UKTV's HR Director, Claire Astley says:

"UKTV is always keen to harness young talent. As a company we feel apprentices bring fresh energy, ideas and provide a valuable window into one of the key demographic markets our channel brands aim to penetrate. Immediately I thought the scheme would be a great chance for us to offer a work opportunity to someone with little or no media experience and provide the right candidate with a fantastic stepping stone to a career in media."
